About

Decades of experience, a lifetime of commitment

H. Aldervan Daly & Associates was founded on the belief that effective fundraising begins with understanding—of organizations, of donors, and of the complex dynamics that drive philanthropic success.

H. Aldervan Daly, CFRE

Principal Consultant

With more than 25 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, I’ve had the privilege of working with organizations across higher education, healthcare, arts and culture, social services, and environmental causes.

My approach is grounded in a deep understanding of donor psychology and organizational behavior. I believe that fundraising, at its best, is about creating meaningful connections between people who want to make a difference and organizations doing important work.

Before founding H. Aldervan Daly & Associates, I served in senior development roles at major research universities and healthcare systems, leading campaigns that raised hundreds of millions of dollars. But more importantly, I learned what makes fundraising sustainable—and what makes it fail.

Today, I bring that experience to organizations of all sizes, helping them build the strategies, systems, and cultures that lead to lasting philanthropic success.

H. Aldervan Daly Bio

H. Aldervan Daly, CFRE, is a nonprofit strategist, fundraiser, educator, and consultant with more than three decades of experience strengthening mission-driven organizations. Through H. Aldervan Daly & Associates, LLC, he partners with nonprofit leaders, boards, and development teams to assess fundraising practice, deepen donor relationships, clarify strategy, and build practical plans for sustainable contributed income.

His work centers on the parts of fundraising that organizations most often get wrong: major gift strategy, annual fund planning, donor segmentation, stewardship systems, board engagement, development operations, and the alignment of communications with fundraising goals. Aldervan is known for pressing leaders past habit and urgency toward the harder question of why a program works the way it does, and what it would take to do better.

That perspective is grounded in senior advancement leadership across human services, youth development, housing, civic, and arts organizations, including roles at HousingPlus, Rising Ground, the Police Athletic League, The New York Foundling, and the Partnership for New York City. He is the creator of Thoughtful Insight, a long-running series of articles on fundraising practice and nonprofit leadership, and a frequent speaker on trauma-informed fundraising and donor relationships.

Aldervan serves on the Global Board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and is active with the African American Development Officers Network and Men of Color in Development. He holds an MFA from Virginia Tech and a BA from Rhodes College, and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive.

Philosophy

I believe fundraising is too often treated as a transactional activity—a series of asks and acknowledgments—when it should be understood as a deeply relational endeavor rooted in shared values and mutual respect.

The organizations that succeed in fundraising are those that build genuine cultures of philanthropy, where everyone from the board chair to the front desk understands and embraces their role in advancing the mission.

My work is informed by research in behavioral science, organizational psychology, and philanthropy studies. But it’s also grounded in the practical realities of nonprofit life—limited resources, competing priorities, and the constant challenge of doing more with less.
