Back To Some Direct Mail Basics

Sometimes we get so focused on what’s new that we forget what’s proven. Here’s a back-to-basics refresher on direct mail fundraising.

The Package Elements

A classic direct mail package includes:

  • Outer envelope: Its job is to get opened. Teaser copy can help—or hurt.
  • Letter: Still the workhorse of the package. Long copy often outperforms short.
  • Reply device: Make it easy to give. Include ask amounts.
  • Reply envelope: Postage-paid lowers friction.
  • Lift note: Optional extra element, often from a different voice.

Writing That Works

Effective appeal letters tend to share certain characteristics:

  • Personal, conversational tone
  • Specific rather than abstract
  • Emotional connection to mission
  • Clear ask with specific amounts
  • Urgency that feels genuine
  • Postscript (often the most-read element)

Testing Fundamentals

You can’t improve what you don’t measure. Test one variable at a time:

  • Ask amount
  • Signatory
  • Envelope teaser
  • Letter length
  • Premium inclusion

Track results rigorously. Let data inform decisions.
